Figure 6-4.  Likelihood of Hurricanes to Strike the United States Based on El Niño and La Niña Occurences

The frequency at which various numbers of hurricanes struck the United States during the 20th century has been found to depend on whether El Niño or La Niña events were occurring. Because of this observed relationship, changes in the frequency and intensity of these events are expected to affect the potential for damaging hurricanes striking the United States. 

Erratum: In this figure, the labels (or colors) are  reversed. The light blue color should refer to La Nina, not El Nino; conversely, the darker colored columns should refer to El Nino years (landfalling hurricanes in the US are more common during La Nina years than during El Nino years).
