| Figure 8a: Arctic sea ice cover, 1979.
Between 1979 and 2003 (Figure 8b), Arctic perennial sea ice has been decreasing at a rate of 9% per decade. The image below shows the minimum sea ice concentration for the year 1979, and the image in Figure 8b shows the minimum sea ice concentration in 2003. The data used to create these images were collected by the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP). Credit: NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. |
