Glacier. "A website
about Antarctica and the part Antarctica plays in our global system of
weather and climate and oceans and geology." Sponsored by the
National Science Foundation's Office of Polar Programs and Rice
University. Iincludes participation of scientists with the West
Antarctic Ice Sheet Study. (4 July 1998)
Global Change Electronic Edition
Global Change System for Analysis, Research and Training (START). START is sponsored by the Human Dimensions of Global Environment Change Program, International Geosphere-Biosphere Program, and the World Climate Research Program. START "focuses on global change issues in specific regional contexts and promotes interdisciplinary research, at a regional level, on the interactions of human and environmental systems affecting and being affected by global changes." This site is a rich and up-to-date source of information. It includes a list of upcoming events and many on-line documents. Global Climate Change Information Program (Manchester, UK). The GCCIP is part of the Atmospheric Research and Information Center of the Manchester Metropolitan University. It seeks to provide information on climate change to the general public, students and others. Includes set of fact sheets on climate change. Global Climate Change Digest. From the Center for Environmental Information (Rochester, New York). Global Climate Observing System. System to "provide the observations needed to meet the scientific requirements for monitoring the climate, detecting climate change, and for predicting climate variations and change." Established by the World Meteorological Organization; the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO); the United Nations Environment Program; and the International Council of Scientific Unions (ICSU).
Global Environment Information Center (Tokyo, Japan) Sponsored by the United Nations University and the Japan Environment Agency. (26 May 1998) Global Environmental Change Program, Economic and Social Research Council (UK). Global Learning & Observations to Benefit the Environment (GLOBE) (US). See US Global Learning & Observations to Benefit the Environment (GLOBE) Goddard Institute for Space Studies (US). See US National Aeronautics and Space Agency (NASA), Goddard Institute for Space Studies Hadley Center for Climate Prediction and Research (Bracknell, Berkshire, UK). Includes access to many climate data sets. See too the set of up-to-date figures showing historical temperature records. (23 July, 1997) IEA Greenhouse Gas R & D Programme. "The IEA Greenhouse Gas R&D Programme (IEA GHG) is an international collaboration which aims to (1) Identify and evaluate technologies for reducing emissions of greenhouse gases arising from use of fossil fuels, (2) Disseminate the results of these studies and (3) Identify targets for research, development and demonstration and promote the appropriate work."(updated 29 Sep 1999) Institute for Global Change Research and Education. Jointly operated by the University of Alabama (Huntsville) and the Universities Space Research Association. Institute of Global Environment and Society (IGES). Includes Center for Ocean-Land-Atmosphere Studies (COLA). Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research. Established under an agreement signed by 16 countries of the Americas on 13 May 1992. The IAI focuses "on increasing our understanding of global-change related phenomena and the societal implications of such phenomena while augmenting the overall scientific capacity of the region." Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. The IPCC was founded jointly by the United Nations Environment Program and the World Meteorological Organization to assess the science of climate change, its impacts and to develop response strategies. This site provides access to the IPCC Second Assessment Report Synthesis Report and Summaries for Policymakers. In addition to a Task Force on Greenhouse Gas Inventories that oversees the IPCC National Greenhouse Gas Inventories Programme (IPCC-NGGIP)., the IPCC has three working groups
See also the IPCC Data Distribution Centre that provides climate change and related scenarios for impacts assessments. International Centre for Antarctic Information and Research (ICAIR), Gateway to Antarctica. ICAIR is a joint initiative between New Zealand, the USA and Italy and operates under the aegis of the New Zealand's Academy of Sciences, The Royal Society of New Zealand. International Coral Reef Initiative (ICRI) International Council on Scientific Unions (ICSU). Non-governmental scientific organization. "The Council seeks to break the barriers of specialization by initiating and coordinating major international interdisciplinary programmes and by creating interdisciplinary bodies which undertake activities and research programmes of interest to several members. A number of bodies set up within ICSU also address matters of common concern to all scientists, such as capacity building of science, development and the freedom in the conduct of science." (12 May, 1997) International Geosphere Biosphere Program, Global Change and Terrestrial Ecosystems (GCTE) Core Project. The objectives of GCTE are to "predict the effects of changes in climate, atmospheric composition, and land use on terrestrial ecosystems including agricultural and production forest systems" and to "determine how these effects lead to feedbacks to the atmosphere and the physical climate system."
